​Isco has claimed that he is “not going to speak to Cristiano Ronaldo again” after seeing his Real Madrid team-mate net a hat-trick for Portugal against Spain at World Cup 2018.

An Iberian derby on Russia soil was expected to produce fireworks, and it did not disappoint as a topsy-turvy encounter swung one way and then the other – with a familiar figure having the final word.

Ronaldo proved to be a thorn in the side of a number of club colleagues as he recorded the 51st treble of his remarkable career, with a stunning late free-kick bagging him the match ball.

Spain were fully aware of the threat posed by a five-time Ballon d’Or winner but they were still unable to contain him, much to the disappointment of Isco.

A man who has won a number of major honours alongside Ronaldo at the Santiago Bernabeu joked to Cadena SER when asked about the exploits of his close friend who is now a fierce rival: “Don't talk to me about Cristiano!

“I'm not going to speak to him again after what he did the other day.

“He doesn't have a high strike rate [from free-kicks], but when he has his day… his first two goals gave him confidence and got him looking for his hat trick.”

Having been held in their opening encounter, much-fancied Spain have plenty to do in order to reach the knockout stage.

Their next Group B fixture will see them face Iran on Wednesday, with Isco adamant that belief inside the camp remains high despite the untimely sacking of coach Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the finals.

He added: “It's true that it was a complicated situation for us to be in, but the hope and belief the squad has is way beyond any setback.

“I think we showed great maturity to deal with what happened and we realise that the most important thing of all is that we are here at the tournament.

“It's a nice challenge for us to confront and we have to give everything we've got to put any issues behind us; we have to pull together and take this forward, like we did against Portugal.”

Isco did not find the target in a 3-3 draw with Portugal, but he did strike the crossbar with one fierce drive and caught the eye with his neat footwork and tidy build up play.

Pressed on whether he could be a contender to claim the Golden Ball in Russia, the 26-year-old playmaker said: “We're still at the start and it's not something I have in mind. The team comes first.

“If the team does well and we go far then it's easier to be considered for those kinds of individual awards.”

He also becomes the fourth man to score in four World Cup finals, having previously netted in 2006, 2010 and 2014. 

Only Brazil's Pele and Germany duo Uwe Seeler and Miroslav Klose can boast a comparable record on the world's biggest football stage. 

And for good measure, he recorded the 51st hat-trick of his career with two further goals, the latter a stunning free-kick - his first successful effort in 45 attempts in a major international tournament - that gave David de Gea no chance. He also became, at 33 years and 130 days old, the oldest player to hit a triple at the World Cup.

It was also the 51st hat-trick in World Cup history, but it might not be the last as the finals jumped into life on Friday.

BREAKING: Spanish Crisis as Spain sack Head Coach less than 24hrs after Real Madrid appointment

​Julen Lopetegui has been sacked as manager of Spain, after taking the Real Madrid job on Tuesday.

Lopetegui was announced as Zinedine Zidane's successor earlier this week in a move that surprised many.

The announcement initially claimed that the 51-year-old would take the reins at Santiago Bernabeu after the conclusion of the tournament, but La Roja have acted now.

"We have to decided to fire the national coach," Spanish Football Federation president, Luis Rubiales, said. "What we have achieved in getting here is due in great part to him, and we must thank him and wish him luck."

Rubiales insists he does not feel undermined, but has suggested that Real acted in a manner unbecoming of their status.

“I don’t feel betrayed. Lopetegui has done impeccable work. How all this has been done is something else.

"I have spoken with the players and I can guarantee they will do everything, along with the new coach, to take the team as far as possible.

"Real Madrid look for the best coach, that is fine by me. I have no opinion about how Real Madrid act. But the federation have an obligation, to represent all Spaniards.

"To win is very important, to have the best coach very important, but above everything is acting in the right way. Maybe this is tough now, but in the end it will make us stronger.”

Lopetegui was unbeaten in his time in the Spain dugout, guiding his team to 14 wins and six draws from 20 matches.

The stunning development threatens to destabilise a team regarded as one of the favourites to win the tournament in Russia.

Spain face Portugal on Friday, and will also face Iran and Morocco in Group B.

Rubiales has not revealed who will be in charge for La Roja's opening game of the tournament, but insists that an announcement will be made in due course.

“We are going to touch as little as possible," he said. "We are working on it. When we know we will tell you.”

It has been reported that several Spain players were keen for Lopetegui to stay on throughout the tournament, but that Rubiales was keen to act after finding out of the manager's agreement with Real Madrid mere minutes before the announcement was made.

The 30-year-old would score a sensational hat-trick to lead his country past Ecuador and see them join Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay inside the top four with Peru claiming the fifth and final spot.

"Luckily, we reacted quickly after Ecuador scored," Messi said after the celebrations in Quito had died down following Argentina's 3-1 win. "Thank God, we fulfilled our objective."

After a terrible campaign that saw Argentina woefully under-perform, it was left to Messi to carry his side to the finals in Russia next year.

Messi has been accused of not showing much personality in the past and often keeps a stoic exterior, but in the changing rooms after his vital hat-trick, the five-time Balon d'Or winner looked like just one of the boys.

After the match, Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli told a news conference: "I told the group: Messi did not owe the World Cup to Argentina, but football owed the World Cup to Messi.

"The nationality of the best player in the world is luckily Argentine."

Sampaoli went on to suggest that there was pressure on his team getting Messi to the World Cup just as much as anything else.

"Football, the World Cup, could not be left without Messi. We had to play with that in mind. As a consequence of that pressure, we are stronger now, this qualification will make us stronger to face the future."

Either way, it's good to see Messi rightfully enjoying his heroics.
