In fact, with his hat-trick performance last night, Messi has broken some incredible records.
1. He is now the all-time top goalscorer in South American World Cup qualifying.
The Argentinian superstar has now scored 21 goals in World Cup qualifying matches. He shares the record with his teammate Luis Suarez.
2. He now has the second best international goal record of all currently active players.
Messi has now 61 goals scored for Argentina, overtaking David Villa’s tally of 59 with Spain.
3. He has now scored five more goals in 2017 than any other player on the planet.
49 goals in 49 games this calendar year – one goal per match ratio.
